Wayne Garland--1977
In 1976 Wayne Garland collected 20
wins with the Orioles, his best season to
date and just before he hit the free agent
market. The right-hander would promptly
cash in on his success by signing a 10-
year/$2.3 million deal with the Cleveland
Indians. It was a huge amount of money
and the longest contract of the day, but
hey, he had to go to Cleveland.
Garland would celebrate his new
contract with a hairdo to die for as he
showed it off in his ’77 cardboard.
He would then go 28-48, 4.50 in 99
outings over five seasons as
ineffectiveness and injuries led to his
being released by the Tribe prior to the
1982 campaign.
Here’s an interesting piece on Garland’s
contract as he opened up on the subject
in 1988.
