Tony Kubek--1958
With a .266 lifetime average and 57
career home runs, Tony Kubek was
ensured in the Baseball Hall of Fame.
Of course, he did so courtesy of his
silver tongue and not his work with
the lumber.

Kubek became the 33rd voice to win
the Ford C. Frick Award in 2009 and
the fourth player to grab the award
after walking off the field and
entering the broadcast booth. The
other former players are Jerry
Coleman, Joe Garagiola and Bob
Uecker. Of the four, Kubek outhit
them all as Coleman hit .263,
Garagiola batted .257 and Uecker
collected a .200 average.

A shortstop on six Yankee pennant
winning clubs, three World Champion
teams, a three-time All-Star and the
1957 Rookie of the Year, Kubek was
far from inadequate on the field.

But he was even better with a
microphone. Growing up in the
1970s, Kubek brought baseball to life
each weekend with NBC's Saturday
Game of the Week.

Congratulations to Tony and thanks
from a generation of baseball fans.
