Tom Morgan--1958
Tom Morgan looks more like a house
painter than a big league pitcher in his
1958 card. Slight build and weak looking,
he should be methodically touching up
the trim on my windows, taking time with
each brush stroke to apply the right
amount while not dripping paint on the
bushes--- not staring down Mickey
Mantle or Ted Williams.
Yet, the spindly (6'1", 180 lbs) right-
hander made a pretty good career for
himself on the mound. He would bounce
between starting duties and the bullpen
chores for five different ball clubs in the
1950s and into the early '60s, posting a
67-47, 3.61 mark with 64 saves.
He would pitch on two Yankee World
Championship clubs ('51 & '56), tie a big
league record with three hit batsmen in
an inning and went by the nickname of
"Plowboy" for reasons I can not explain.
Editor's Note: Morgan would hold Ted
Williams to a .250 average, while The
Mick would hit .278 off him, though he
usually walked the pair of Hall of
Famers, issuing eight free passes to
Williams and five to Mantle.
