Tom Egan--1967
Apparently Topps put Tom Egan on the
trade market before he was actually
dealt, as this is the only reason we can
think of as to why the card maker would
airbrush out the Angels logo on his cap.
Signed as a Bonus Baby by the Angels
after hitting .520 with 10 home runs for El
Rancho High School (which is just north
of Anaheim) in 1964; Egan would spend
eight of ten big league seasons with the
Halos.
Primarily a reserve catcher during his big
league career, Egan would play in just
one game for California during the
summer of ‘67 when this card came out.
However, it wasn’t until after the 1970
season when Egan was swapped to the
White Sox along with right-hander Tom
Bradley and fly catcher Jay Johnstone in
exchange for Gold Glove outfielder Ken
Berry, utility infielder Syd O’Brien and
hurler Billy Wynne.
In Chicago, Egan would hit a career-high
.239 during 1971, before returning to his
Mendoza-like . 191 average the next
season.
Re-acquired by the Angels via the Rule
V Draft prior to the ‘74 season, Egan
would collect his career highlight on
September 28, 1874 when he caught
Nolan Ryan’s third career no-hitter.
Ironically, Egan’s original number of 30
when he first played with the Angels in
the 1960’s was worn by Nolan Ryan in
1974. The catcher had to settle for No.
10 as he finished off his big league
career with the Angels.
Editor’s Note: Egan would .200 with 22
long balls in 373 big league games
between 1965 and 1975.
