Tigers Celebrate Their Victory--1969
On This Date in Major League
History, October 10, 1968...

On this date--- October 10, 1968--- I was
kinda sick. I don't remember if it was a
stomach ache, a headache or just the
24-hour flu; but I do remember being
home and lying in bed while I listened on
the radio to the Tigers defeat the
Cardinals in Game Seven to win the
1968 World Series

The next year as I collected the '69
Topps cards, this cardboard brought to
life the celebration that I listened to the
previous Fall. While I wasn't a Tigers'
fan, this was an awesome card.

A half-naked Willie Horton showing us his
armpit. Thirty-one game winner Denny
McClain joining the cheer. Dick McAuliffe
wearing a hat that made him look like
Jack Lemmon of
The Odd Couple.

Behind the arm of left-hander Mickey
Lolich, which produced three wins and
the bats of Norm Cash (.385), Al Kaline
(.379) and Horton (.304); the Tigers
upended the reigning World Champion
Cardinals.

And I faked being sick so I could skip
school to listen to the game.

Editor's Note: It was a simple time. No
goggles or scuba diving gear in the
1960s--- just let the champaign bubbles
burn the eyes.
