Terry Felton---1983
On This Date in Major League
History, August 11, 1982…
In a relief role on August 11, 1982,
Minnesota reliever Terry Felton was
tagged with the loss as the Twins
went down in defeat, 6-3, to the
California Angels. Just another day,
we think not, as the loss brought
Felton's season record to 0-11 and
when added to his three losses in
1980, gave the Felton the Major
League record for the most losses to
begin a career at 14.
Cleveland's Guy Morton previously
set the record for consecutive losses
to begin a career, waaaay back in
1914, he lost his first 13 decisions
when hurling for the Indians. Morton
would log a victory to go 1-13 during
his rookie season. The right-hander
would proceed to an 11-year career,
going 98-88 for the Tribe.
“I don’t want to talk,” Felton told the
press after his record-breaking
outing. He also declined a request to
appear on ABC’s “Good Morning
America” TV show to talk about his
losing streak, instead opting to forgo
his 15 minutes of fame.
Felton would close out the 1982
campaign with two more losses to
bring his career record to 0-16.
Unfortunately, he would never again
pitch in the big leagues, though
Topps thought he might, as they
issued a 1983 card of the former 2nd
round pick of the Twins.
We thought the shot Topps used of
Felton for his 1983 card is "oh, so
appropriate" as the Minnesota right-
hander is looking into the stands for
something. Possibly for a win... which
would never come.

Editor's Note: The back of Felton's
'83 card highlights his three saves
from the 1982 season, as well as, his
distinction of recording a putout at
third base to complete a triple play
against the Yankees on May 29,
1982. For years he recounted the
triple play to all willing listeners at
family holidays and high school class
reunions.
