Ted Gray--1952
The lefty, with particularly perfect white
teeth in his '52 cardboard, Ted Gray
would twirl nine seasons in the bigs,
primarily for the Tigers.

Interestingly, after just one season in the
minors, Gray found himself pitching for
Navy teams during World War II. His
obituary noted that in 1943, Gray won 12
straight games and averaged 17
strikeouts per outing for the Navy.

After the leaving the service, Gray would
head directly to the Tigers roster to open
1946.

Yet, it wasn't until 1950 when the
southpaw would enjoy his greatest
success, when he won his first ten
games en route to being named to the
American League All-Star Squad.

Unfortunately, it went downhill from there
as the Tiger hurler allowed a
game-winning home run to St. Louis
Cardinal second baseman Red
Schoendienst in the 14th inning of the
Mid-Summer Classic to take the loss.
Gray would proceed to lose his
remaining decisions in '50 to finish 10-7
on the year.

The next season he would lead the
American League with 14 losses. In '52
the lefty would lose 17 games on the
season. Gray would go 10-15 for the
Tigers in '53, which would be his final
season of consistent work as a starter.

Gray would bounce from the Tigers to
the White Sox to the Indians to the
Yankees and finally the Orioles all within
the 1955 season--- his last in the big
leagues.

He would finish with a 59-74, 4.37 mark
in 222 outings.
