Skip Guinn--1970
Most Astros fans remember Skip
Guinn coming along with Jack
Billingham and $100,000 from the
Montreal Expos to Houston in the
infamous non-trade of Donn
Clendenon to Houston, when the
Expos first sacker refused to report
after being part of an exchange that
sent the Astros' Rusty Staub to the
Canadian club.
Others remember him for being a
vertically challenged lefty who could
whiff a big league hitter, 36 in 31-
2/3 innings with the Astros, but
managed only one victory in 32
outings over parts of two seasons
for Houston.
However, we prefer to remember
Guinn as one of the many big
leaguers who went by the nickname
“Skip” as he attempted to hide from
his given name. After all, Guinn was
the first player named Drannon to
ever take the field in the majors…
and will probably be the last.
Editor’s Note: The back of his card
notes that “Skip enjoys his tape
recorder in his spare time.” What
he did with it is anyone’s guess.
