Scratch Off---1970
In the early 1970s, a player knew he was a
big cheese when he was featured on a
"Baseball Scratch Off" game for Topps.

Included in packs, the Scratch Off game was
an added bonus to be enjoyed while you
chomped on the stiff, yet delectable aged
stick of bubble gum. However, investing in
these as a collector is the equivalent of
hoarding Houston Jiminez cards in the 1980s.

As one can tell, this was a nail-biter as the
home team plated four runs in the bottom of
the 8th to score a come-from-behind, 7-5
win. Unfortunately, I don't know which one of
us won.

These Scratch Off games can be found on
e-Bay for $1.00 to $3.00, with shipping
usually costing more than the item.

But, to tell the truth, playing the game back
in 1970 was worth far more than the few
dollars this item would bring today. As
playing these games were just another piece
of the puzzle that made me the baseball guy
that I am today.

I probably played this game against my
friend Bart, who lived a block away. We
were in the same grade and both loved
baseball. We pooled our cards
together for the summer so we would
have enough cards to form each of the
24 teams. We also made the critical
collector's error of marking our cards
with a "5" (mine) or a "6" (Bart's),
usually in pen. Using a baseball lunch
box with little magnets for base
runners, we spent hours honing our
managerial skills.
