Sandy Koufax--1964
On this date in Major League
Baseball History... June 4, 1964

On June 4, 1964, southpaw Sandy
Koufax registered the third of his four
career no-hitters, a 3-0 blanking of the
Philadelphia Phillies at Connie Mack
Stadium.

With a sizzling fastball and a wicked-
nasty curve ball, Koufax walked just one
(Dick Allen in the 4th inning) and fanned
twelve in facing the minimum 27 batters,
as Allen was wiped out attempting to
steal second base.

Sitting in the press box before games,
many times we younger scouts will ask
the veteran scouts who played in the
1960's about the game during that era. I
love listening to Bobby Wine, Jim Fregosi
and others talk about playing in the
1960’s.

Well, talk one day turned to the top
pitchers of the decade. The consensus
was Bob Gibson was the meanest one,
not caring if he hit you or not. Don
Drysdale was the intimidator, with his
high-and-tight fastballs. Sam McDowell
was the wild one, keeping hitters loose in
the batters box.

As for Sandy Koufax, he just went after
hitters and dominated with pure stuff---
as he did on June 4, 1964.
