Sam Mele--1965
"Cheezeburger! Cheezeburger!"
"Last one on the field is a rotten egg!"
"Hey good lookin', what ya got cookin'?"
We can only imagine what Sam Mele was
yelling when this picture was taken for
his 1965 card. Whatever he said, it sure
did fire up the Twins, as Minnesota won
a franchise-record 102 victories (which
stills stands) for Mele in '65 to capture
the American League pennant.
Unfortunately Mele didn't yell the right
words during the World Series as the
Twins lost to Sandy Koufax and the Los
Angeles Dodgers.
An exceptional defensive outfielder with
a strong arm, Mele toiled for six different
clubs during his 10-year major league
career. After a potent rookie campaign
with Boston (.302-12-73), Mele had a
pedestrian career.
However, the right-handed swinger did
enjoy one memorable inning at the plate.
As a member of the White Sox on June
10, 1952, Mele tripled and homered,
while driving in six runs in one inning
versus Philadelphia.
As a skipper Mele posted a 524-436
record in seven seasons of guiding
Minnesota.
