RYNE DUREN--1961
With Coke-bottle thick glasses and a
big fastball, Ryne Duren averaged six
walks per nine innings over his 589
major league innings during his
10-year big league career. Bouncing
between the Orioles, A's, Yankees,
Angels, Phillies, Reds and Senators;
clubs continually took a chance to
harness Duren's outstanding stuff
that could be devastating at times.
Duren's 1961 card notes his
struggles:
The fireballing right-hander was a
bullpen sensation for the Yankees
in 1958 and 1959, as his
microscopic E.R.A. verfies. Ryne
was plagued by wildness last year
which hampered his effectiveness.
Of course, he never came close to
matching his numbers from '58 (75
IP, 40 H, 2.02 ERA) and '59 (76 IP,
49 H, 1.88 ERA).
For us, the look on his face says, "I'm
Ryne Duren and I make no apologies
for my wildness."
(Editor's note: Duren was an idol to a
few folks as he would serve as the
namesake for Hall of Famer Ryne
Sandberg)
