Ron Hunt--1966
Without the aid of body armor like the
modern day baseball gladiators don,
Ron Hunt established a major league
record when he was hit by pitches
243 times during his 12-year career.
No elbow pads. No extra padding
added to the top of his batting glove.
And even though he choked up on
the bat, he was a man's man at the
plate.
“Some people give their bodies to
science; I give mine to baseball,”
Editor's Note: Hunt hit .273 during his
career, while leading the National
League in being hit by pitches in
seven of his final eight seasons. Don
Baylor and Craig Biggio would
subsequently top Hunt's major
league record.
