Ron Guidry---1978
Thirty years ago, June 17, 1978, Ron
Guidry fanned 18 Angels in setting
an American League mark for left-
handers, as the Yankees downed
California, 4-0. The hard-throwing
southpaw played no favorites, as he
struck out every Angel batter at least
once in the contest, however, Joe
Rudi was a repeated target, as the
first sacker whiffed four times. With
the victory, the “Louisiana Lightning”
as Guidry was called, improved to 11-
0 on the year, en route to arguably
one of the best seasons for a hurler
in the history of the game.

When the season came to a close,
Guidry finished with a 25-3, 1.74
mark in helping the Yankees post
100 victories, one better than their
bitter rival the 99-win Boston Red
Sox. The Bronx Bombers went on to
cruise past the Royals in the AL
Championship Series and bested the
Dodgers in six games to capture the
franchise’s 22nd World
Championship.

Deservedly, Guidry claimed Cy
Young Award honors for the 1978
season… along with a place in the
records book.
