Reggie Cleveland--1977

Today team notes for the Cubs that right-
hander “Ryan Dempster reached the 10-
win mark for the seventh time in his
career. He is the third Canadian-born
pitcher with at least that many 10-plus
win seasons. Fergie Jenkins had 15 and
Reggie Cleveland had eight.”
Reggie Cleveland had eight 10+ win
seasons ???
I grew up watching baseball in the 1970s
and I don’t remember Reggie Cleveland
winning that many games, let alone
being born in Canada. I always thought
he was from Ohio.
Sure enough he did, as the right-hander
who was born in Swift Current,
Saskachewan, Canada logged seven
consecutive 10+ win seasons. Three
years with the Cardinals, before being
traded to the Red Sox where he
registered four more seasons. Then with
his career winding down, as Cleveland
worked a swingman role for the Brewers,
he recorded an 11-9 mark in 1980.
All totaled Cleveland went 105-106 in 13
big league seasons, which is basically
how I remember him. Though I guess if
you get thirty starts per year, you should
hopefully gather 10 wins along the way
while on good clubs.
Of course, we would have known this if
we would have paid more attention to the
Canadian Baseball Hall of Fame
elections, for Cleveland and body of
steady work was elected to their Hall of
Fame in 1986.
With that, Ryan Dempster can expect to
hear the Canadian Hall of Fame call his
name when he hangs up his fastball.
