Red Barrett--1945
On This Date in Major League
History, August 10, 1944…
As games seem to be lasting forever this
season, especially the Yankee-Red Sox
match ups, wouldn't it have been great to
have witnessed Red Barrett's 2-0 win
over the Reds on August 10, 1944?
The Boston Brave right-hander faced 29
batters in twirling a 2-hitter over the
Reds and Bucky Walters. Barrett would
walk one and induce 13 ground outs, five
fly outs, seven pop ups (three foul) and
two line outs as Barrett set a major
league record for fewest pitches in a
complete game, hurling just 58
pitches in the victory!
Walters was pretty good too, as the
contest lasted just one hour and 15
minutes.
A career .500-pitcher, Barrett would go
69-69, 3.53 in 11 big league seasons for
the Reds, Braves and Cardinals. In
1944, he would go 9-16 for the 6th place
Braves giving further evidence that
sometimes baseball's great
achievements are not always achieved
by the stars.
Editor's Note: Barrett would achieve All-
Star status in '45, going 23-12 in a
season split between Boston and St.
Louis, though no Mid-Summer Classic
was played that year. A fun-loving guy,
Barrett is awfully serious in this card. His
life has been documented as part of the
