Rafael Ramirez--1981
On June 5, 1985, Atlanta’s Rafael
Ramirez connected on a two-run homer
off Chicago closer Lee Smith in the top
of the 11th inning to make a winner out
of the Braves in front of 25,557 fans---
and Ferris Bueller.
In case you missed it, here’s a piece by
Larry Granillo of Baseball Prospectus, as
he tracked down the game shown in the
movie, “Ferris Bueller’s Day Off” :
Searching for Bueller
Editor’s Note: It would be one of 53
career long balls for the native
Dominican, who manned shortstop for
the Braves and Astros during the 1980s
and early 1990s. Ramirez would gather
All-Star accolades in 1984, though that
was more a result of his impressive
showing at the plate the previous season
when he hit .297 for Atlanta in '83. He
would flash good range at shortstop,
which helped him gather many balls
though not always cleanly, as Ramirez
routinely leading NL shortstops in errors,
which could help explain Ramirez' look in
his 1981 card. It just wasn't gonna be
easy.
