Ralph Gagliano--1965
The younger brother of 12-year
major leaguer Phil Gagliano, Ralph
didn't quite enjoy the same success.
Signed by the Indians in 1964,
Gagliano made just one appearance
in a major league game--- September
21, 1965--- and didn't even get the
opportunity to swing the bat or field a
ball.
The wiry Gagliano was inserted as a
pinch-runner for Cleveland shortstop
Larry Brown after Brown singled off
Mel Stottlemyer with one out in the
9th inning of an eventual 9-4 Yankee
win.
Even his time on the field was
short-lived, as Gagliano was forced
out at second base when fellow
rookie Richie Scheinblum grounded
to Yankee second baseman Bobby
Richardson who flipped to Bobby
Murcer.
But my, what a moment it had to be
for Gagliano to be standing out on
first base at Yankee Stadium--- after
all, he made it into the record books
and onto a baseball card.
Time is short--- eat more frosting.....
