Pete Fox--1934
Looking through more World Series
records as the 2011 Fall Classic wraps
up, we came across Pete Fox's name.
An outfielder with the Tigers in the 30's
and Red Sox in the 40's; Fox appeared
in three separate World Series' with the
Tigers. It was in the '34 Series versus the
Cardinals where Fox landed in the
record books when he rapped out six
doubles to set a single-series mark for
two-baggers.
Batting eighth, Fox doubled in four of
seven games as Detroit lost to St. Louis.
He would finish with a .286 mark in the
series and an impressive .500 slugging
percentage as the six doubles
represented 75% of his hits.
Fox would finish a 13-year career with .
298 average, rapping out 314 doubles
compared to just 65 home runs.
An All-Star in '44 with Boston, Fox would
eventually hang up the glove and grab a
stopwatch working as a scout for the
Chicago White Sox before eye troubles
forced him to the sidelines.
Originally from Evansville, Indiana, Fox
would become a member of the Indiana
Baseball Hall of Fame in 1980.
Editor's Note: His given name was
"Ervin". I own a few of the "Batter Up"
cards, which allow one to punch out the
picture of the player as the card can
stand up.
