Pat Corrales---1971
In 1963, Avis Rent A Car launched a
bold ad campaign. Its message simply
was: ‘We know we’re only the number
two rental company. We can’t be
complacent – we have to try harder.
So come on, why not give us a go?’
Shortly thereafter, Pat Corrales
embarked on his nine-year major
league, where he averaged 38 games
per season. The future manager and
coach eclipsed 100 at-bats in just
three seasons, drove in more than 10
runs in a season only twice and hit a
grand total of four home runs in 767
at-bats.
Here's the list of catchers that
Corrales caddied for:
1964-65 Clay Dalrymple-Phillies
1966 Tim McCarver-Cardinals
1968-72 Johnny Bench-Reds
1972-73 Fred Kendall-Padres
"Dad, I almost got to play in the game
today." Such is the life of a perennial
backup.
On the back of Pat Corrales' 1971
card, the hind snatcher is touted as
being rated by many as baseball's
best #2 catcher.
Thus, Pat Corrales will forever be
known as the Avis of catchers during
the late-1960's and early-1970's.
