Ossee Schreckengost--1903
On This Date in Major League
History, July 4, 1905…

It was on this date, July 4, 1905 when
Ossee Schreckengost turned in a
yeoman's duty that resulted in his name
being placed in the major league record
books. For it was on this date when the
Philadelphia A's catcher caught 28
innings in one day to set a major league
mark.

With a doubleheader scheduled on
Independence Day, Schreckengost
squatted behind the plate as Rube
Waddell bested Boston's Cy Young in a
4-2, 25-inning affair.

The hind snatcher would also catch
three more innings in the second game,
which we are assuming was cancelled
due to darkness.

Just 5'10", 180, the catcher/first
baseman would play 11 seasons in the
bigs, starting in 1897 with the Louisville
Colonels and ending with the Chicago
White Sox in 1908. A career .271 hitter,
Schreckengost would also hold the
distinction of making the final out of
Addie Joss' no-hitter on October 8,
1908--- which also wound up being his
last major league at bat.

Have a great Fourth of July... hopefully
you will take it easy an not catch 28
innings!
