Neal Ball--1911
On This Date in Major League
History, July 19, 1909…
There's always a first for everything,
though sometimes the first has yet to
occur.
Though on this date, July 19, 1909,
Cleveland shortstop Neal Ball pulled off
the first unassisted triple play in major
league history.
It came against the Boston Red Sox as
Cleveland was known as the "Naps" at
the time.
Here is a link to an article by The
Cleveland Plain Dealer as they
celebrated the accomplishment two
years ago on the 100th anniversary of
the event:
Neal Ball's Unassisted Triple Play
Ball would enjoy a 7-year career with the
Highlanders, Naps and Red Sox;
hitting .250 while registering a .915
fielding percentage primarily in the
middle of the infield, though he would
occasionally migrate over to third base,
while also standing in the outfield for
seven games.
Today belongs to Neal Ball.
Editor's Note: If I owned this card, it
would be 100 years old--- but I don't. My
oldest cards only date back to 1919.
