Mike Shannon--1965
Born and raised in the St. Louis area,
Mike Shannon was a staple to the great
Cardinal teams of the 1960s that claimed
two World Championships. A career .255
hitter, Shannon saw his career come to a
premature end in 1970 when he
contracted a rare kidney disease. From
there he would make his way into the
radio booth, where fans continue to
enjoy his deep voice in calling the
Cardinals games today, 39 years later.

We find it interesting in that one never
knows when they will cross paths with
slice of baseball.

This past winter, the high school
basketball team I was helping coach
played in a holiday tournament in
Shelbyville, Kentucky.  With a game
scheduled at Martha Collins High School,
we found a piece of Mike Shannon on
the wall, as he was a sponsor of their
athletic program.
Apparently Shannon has relatives in the
area and  he graciously made a
contribution to the school, resulting in a
banner being raised for his contribution.

Like we say, one just needs to look
around to see pieces of baseball
throughout our land... even in
Shelbyville, KY.
