Mike Epstein--1969
Believe it or not, Mike Epstein is in the
Hall of Fame...
...it's just in Rochester, NY.
A two-time minor league MVP, Epstein
dominated the International League in
1966 while playing for Baltimore’s Triple-
A club in Rochester.
Nicknamed the “Superjew”, Epstein hit
.309 with 29 homers and 102 RBI in '66;
while walking 94 times in logging an
incredible .423 OBP for the season.
Besides league MVP honors, Epstein
also garnered The Sporting News' Minor
League Player of the Year award.
Epstein’s power did carry over to the big
leagues for several seasons, as the lefty
swinger finished third in the American
League with 26 long balls in 1972 with
the World Champion Oakland A’s. He
topped out with 30 homers in ’69 under
the tutelage of Senators manager Ted
Williams.
While he fell short of reaching the
hallowed halls of Cooperstown with .
244-130-380 numbers in nine big league
seasons; Epstein does reside on a wall
in Rochester’s Frontier Field. And that
ain’t bad.
