Mike Benjamin--1990
On This Date in Major League
History, June 14, 1995…

Signed by the Giants off the campus of
Arizona State after being drafted in the
third round, Mike Benjamin was a good
fielding utility infielder who struggled at
the plate throughout his 13-year major
league career.

In early June of 1995, Giants slugger
Matt Williams went on the DL with a
broken foot, the result of fouling a ball off
his foot. Hitting just .150 as he entered
the Candlestick Park on June 11, 1995
as Dusty Baker's new third baseman;
Williams would go 4-for-6, all singles, as
San Francisco bowed to Montreal, 10-8
in extra innings.

The Giants had an off-day as they
traveled to Chicago to take on the Cubs.
The four-hit outburst raised Benjamin's
average to .269 when he went to work at
Wrigley Field on June 13th. The right-
handed swinger continued to swing the
hot bat, rapping out four more hits,
including a solo home run off Jamie
Navarro to help the Giants pull away
from the Cubs for an 8-4 victory.

The four-hit day against the Cubs saw
Benjamin's average climb to .355 on the
season--- but he wasn't done.

On June 14th, Williams went 6-for-7 in
the Giants 4-3 win over Chicago, as his
single drove in Robby Thompson with
the game-winning run in the 13th inning.

At the conclusion of the three days,
Benjamin would set a major league
record, as his 14 hits were the most ever
for a three-game period. The 29-year-
old went 14-for-18, taking his average
from .150 to  .447 in one quick swoop.

Unfortunately, that would be the high
water mark of the season for Benjamin,
as the infielder finished the '95 campaign
with a .220 average. Yet, for three
golden days in June of 1995, Mike
Benjamin was the best hitter in the game.
