Lee Guetterman--1991
On This Date in Major League
History, May 24, 1989…
On this date in 1989, Lee Guetterman
woke up on top of the world. As he
headed to Yankee Stadium for the game
against the Angels, the lefty had tossed
29-2/3 innings of scoreless ball to open
the season, establishing a major league
record for relievers.
How much further would he go?
Not far. Just one more inning.
Unfortunately, that night the roof caved
in as Anaheim left fielder Chili Davis led
off the top of the ninth inning with a
home run off Guetterman during his
second inning of work to close out his
incredible run of 30-2/3 shutout innings.
The Angels would score four more times
in the stanza as the visitors downed the
Bronx Bombers, 11-4.
Guetterman would turn in a solid season
as he logged a 3.44 ERA over the final
73-1/3 innings of work in '89 in setting up
for closer Dave Righetti. As a result of
his record-breaking start, Guetterman
enjoyed his finest big league season as
he finished with a 5-5, 2.45 mark, while
collecting 13 saves of his own.
All totalled after 11 seasons, Guetterman
would go 38-36, 4.33; which makes his
streak even more incredible, as the
otherwise average reliever would etch
his name in the record books.
