Larry Haney---1969
Earlier in the week we highlighted how
Dale Long took his place behind home
plate on August 20, 1958 to become
one of the few left-handed players to
catch in a major league game.
Well, looking at Larry Haney’s 1969
card, it appears that Haney was also a
southpaw catcher. Unfortunately the
card is a mistake. Topps used Haney’s
picture from 1968 and in the process
reversed the negative to make the
right-handed Haney a left-handed
catcher.
Oopps.
The native Virginian spent portions of
twelve seasons in the bigs as a
defensive-minded backup catcher
bouncing from Baltimore to the
expansion Seattle Pilots to Oakland,
St. Louis and Milwaukee. In 480
games, the right-handed swinger hit a
woeful .215 with 12 long balls,
suggesting that maybe Haney should
have tried batting left-handed… he
probably couldn’t have done any
worse.
Editor's Note: Look at the size of his
catcher's glove--- wouldn't this be a
awesome 3-D card?
