Ken Hamlin--1966
The pride of Western Michigan
University, Ken Hamlin went straight from
the campus to the big leagues when the
infielder was originally signed by the
Pittsburgh Pirates in 1957.

While his initial big league stay didn't last
long, the shortstop by trade did bounce
between the bigs and the minor leagues
during a 10-year professional career.

Never hitting better than .295 during his
playing days, we understand that he was
known for his defense as his cardboard
notes that Hamlin led the International
League in fielding in 1963.

Later in his career, Hamlin would
increase his value to a club by also
playing second base which was the
result of countless hours of learning how
to turn the double play from the right
side of the diamond.

Here in his 1966 card, Hamlin is seen
practicing turning a double play down by
the bullpen which can explain why he
was known for his glove work.

Editor’s Note: Hamlin was inducted into
the Western Michigan University in the
fall of 2010.
