Keith Moreland--1985
Most likely too busy to pose for a
photo, Keith Moreland is shown in
one of the only cards that we can
remember where one can see the
player's entire last name on the back
of his jersey.
With a football mentality picked up
during his years on the gridiron at
the University of Texas, Moreland
survived numerous crashes into the
vine covered walls of Wrigley Field.
However, he was a favorite of the
Cub fans for his blue collar hustle,
despite his limited defensive abilities.
Though Moreland was like a bull in a
china shop when using his glove, he
routinely hit over .270 during his
12-year career, as he peppered line
drives into gaps that usually resulted
in doubles. Every-so-often (121
times), he managed to elevate the
ball just enough to get out of the yard.
He gave the Cubs personality and a
swagger that helped Chicago make
the playoffs in 1984 after years of
bitter disappointment. This card is
just so Keith Moreland... and we
mean that in a good way.
