Jose Cruz--1973
He was an All-Star?

Playing 13 seasons for the Houston
Astros from 1975 to 1987, it was hard to
remember that Jose Cruz originally was a
St. Louis Cardinals.

A .247 hitter in five seasons with the
Cardinals patrolling center field, Cruz
would blossom once sold to the Astros
prior to the 1975 season.

A consistent .290-.300 hitter, Cruz led
the National League with 189 hits in
1983. The fly catcher would be named to
two All-Star Squads, 1980 and 1985.

While he would ride the pine in the '80
Mid-Summer Classic; Cruz would grab
some playing time in the National
Leagues' 6-1 win in Minnesota in 1985,
walking twice and grounding out in three
plate appearances.

What we don't understand is how St.
Louis missed on Jose Cruz' potentially
big bat. Maybe they should have just
looked at his 1973 card, where Cruz' bat
was so big, it could not be be fully
captured by his card.
