Joe Verbanic--1968
The date was December 10, 1966. It was
a day that would be celebrated by
Yankee faithful for years. Children would
play gleefully in the streets, Men would
drink an extra round to cheer the day,
while women openly wept tears of joy.
For December 10, 1966, was the day the
Yankees acquired Joe Verbanic from the
Phillies for aging right-hander Pedro
Ramos.
And the Topps folks noted the event on
the back of Verbanic's card as such:
"The Yankees made an offer for Joe that The
Phils couldn't turn down and the righthander
is now proudly wearing pin-stripes."
At age 32, Ramos was having a mild
bout with success as a reliever after
spending most of his career losing
games for the Senators, Twins and
Indians in the late 1950s and early
1960s. Then came along the opportunity
for the Yankees to ship Ramos off to the
Phils for the young hard-throwing
Verbanic--- and the rest is history.
Ramos would pitch eight innings for the
Phillies in 1967 before bouncing from the
A's to the Pirates, Reds and Senators. He
would finish with a 117-160 career
record.
As for Verbanic... he proudly wore
pinstripes for three seasons, finishing
out a career that lasted 92 outings and
an 11-12 mark.
Tears of joy...
Editor's Note: Apparently the excitement
waned some, as Topps didn't even ask
for a new picture of Verbanic for his '69
card.
