Jim Tobin--1939
On This Date in Major League
History, April 27, 1944…
On this date, Boston Brave hurler Jim
Tobin had a big day. Not only did the
right-hander hurl a no-hitter against
Brooklyn, he also slugged a home run in
the 2-0 victory.
Yes, it was a big day for Tobin, who in
1944 had just begun throwing the
knuckleball. Apparently he did it quiet
well, because Tobin would throw his
second career no-hitter later that season
(June 22 vs. Philadelphia Phillies) and
also find himself amongst the All-Stars in
the '44 Mid-Summer Classic. The
Oakland native would go 18-19, 3.01 on
the season.
While the right-hander posted a 105-
112, 3.44 mark over 9 seasons for the
Pirates, Braves and Tigers; he was also
known for his handling of the lumber.
Apparently Tobin was inserted by
managers over 100 times as a pinch-
hitter during his big league career.
So, while the home run during his no-
hitter sounds like a nice crowning
moment to a very good day, in reality it
should come as no surprise as Tobin
would connect on 17 long balls during
his career while sporting a .230 batting
average. He would also poke 35 career
doubles and drive in 102 runs, fanning
just 18% (162 K/884 AB) of the time.
While the no-hitter brought him attention
on this date back in '44, it is Tobin's bat
that we find intriguing here on Cardboard
Gods today.
