Jim Nelson---1971
Jim Nelson roared out of the gate
during his rookie debut in 1970,
going 4-0, before the skinny right-
hander faded into the abyss of 1970s
Has-Beens. Nelson would make 32
appearances for the Pirates in
1970-71, going 6-4, 3.06 during an
abbreviated career that was cut short
due to rotator cuff problems.
However, Nelson will forever find
himself in the Pirates record book as
being the winning pitcher for the
Pirates in their final game at Forbes
Field on June 28, 1970.

Known for his palm ball, Nelson made
sure that nobody would accidentally
take his brand new Spalding glove,
by grabbing a magic marker and
using his absolute best printing to put
his name on the webbing instead of
on the thumb portion. Nelson was so
impressed with his own penmanship
that he made sure that all who
collected his card would share in his
“Hello, I'm Jim Nelson and here is my
new glove” moment.
