Jim Lonborg--1972
Shortly after Jim Lonborg’s 1967 season
that saw the 25-year-old go  22-9, 3.16
en route to winning the American League
Cy Young Award, we understand the
lanky right-hander turned dastardly.

Possibly it was the bitterness of losing
Game 7 of the ’67 Fall Classic to Bob
Gibson and the St. Louis Cardinals,
following his dominant season. Or it
could have been the reality that his
success was momentarily fleeting as
Lonborg followed his Year of Cy with
injuries that limited him to 27 victories
with Boston over the next four seasons.
Then again, maybe the man we knew as
“Gentleman Jim” was really evil.

Whatever the case may be, Lonborg
found himself with the Milwaukee
Brewers in 1972 caught in the act of  a
Snidley Whiplash impersonation for
Topps.

Dastardly.

Editor’s Note: After his lone season in
Milwaukee, Lonborg would resurrect his
career with the Phillies logging 17- and
18-win seasons with Philadelphia, while
each weekend I watched Dudley Do-
Right dispose of Snidely Whiplash. He
would finish his career with a 157-137
record, before retiring to pursue a
second career as a dentist, where he
would proudly to show off his pearly
whites.

As for Snidely, we assume that he hung
himself with the rope he practiced
bondage with on Nell.

Here's a You Tube link to a Dudley Do-
Right cartoon, for those of you who
weren't around during the 1960's and
early 1970's:
