Jim Colborn--1977
On This Date in Major League
History, September 27, 1974…
In an era before pitch counts, aces faced
off as the 1974 season drew to a close.
Milwaukee’s Jim Colborn and
Baltimore’s Jim Palmer hurled
goose eggs at each other; as Colborn
tossed 13 innings of shutout ball, while
Palmer departed after 12 scoreless
innings.
Colborn, coming off his lone 20-win
season of 1973, scattered eight hits and
six walks, while fanning nine en route to
setting the Brewers team record for the
most innings pitched in a game.
Unfortunately for the Brewers, the
Orioles plated off a run of closer Tom
Murphy in the 17th inning to win the
contest, 1-0.
Colborn would go 83-88, 3.80 in 10
seasons with four different clubs, logging
60 complete games--- and one game in
which he went 13 innings and came up
empty.
Editor's Note: The win for the Orioles
that day was their fourth in a string of
nine straight victories to close the
season, as Baltimore edged the
Yankees by 2 games in the AL East.
They would lose to the eventual World
Champion Oakland A's in the ALCS.
