Jim Barbieri--1967
Jim Barbieri's big league career lasted
just 39 games, as the lefty swinger hit
.280 for the Dodgers in 1966. That was
good enough to earn Barbieri three
distinctions:
1) A spot on the Dodgers '66 World
Series roster; where Barbieri fanned
against Baltimore's Moe Drabowsky in
Game 1 of the Series that was won by
the Orioles.
2) It gave him enough promise that the
Topps people issued this 1967 card of
Barbieri. Unfortunately, his '66 stint with
the Dodgers would be his only big
league action.
3) Allowed him to become a trivia
answer, as Barbieri was the first player
from a Little League Championship team
to play in the World Series. His
Schenectady, NY team won the 1954
Little League World Series Title, while his
one at-bat in the 1966 Fall Classic
helped him gain trivia status.
Editor's Note: Barbieri did a good job of
keeping his eye on the ball in his '67
card as hitting was his forte'. He would
commit two errors in 20 big league
games in the outfield for Los Angeles,
good for a .939 fielding average (the
league average was .975 in '66).
