Jerry Walker--1960
He was an All-Star?

Glancing through the many All-Star
Game box scores, I came across Jerry
Waker's name in the second All-Star
Game of 1959.

The right-hander was handed starting
duties for the American League by
Yankee manager Casey Stengel
courtesy of a respectable 8-5, 2.62 mark
that season with the Baltimore Orioles.

The Ada, Oklahoma native would allow
just one run in three innings of work, as
a lead-off double by Johnny Temple
would later score on a Hank Aaron
sacrifice fly in the first inning.

Otherwise, Walker handled a National
League lineup that featured Aaron, Willie
Mays, Ernie Banks and Stan Musial. He
would allow just two hits and a walk,
fanning future Hall of Famer Eddie
Mathews.

It would be the lone All-Star game for
Walker who would log a 37-44, 4.36
mark over eight big league seasons with
the Orioles, A's and Indians.

Presently a big league scout for the
Cincinnati Reds, Walker is truly one of
the great guys in the game of baseball.
When I have asked with him about his
career, the unassuming Walker has
never mentioned his All-Star
appearance. Hopefully the next time I
share a game with Jerry, he will talk
about the experience of when he
recorded the win for the American
League in the 1959 All-Star Game.
