Jerry Morales--1974
Thanks to the gaudy San Diego uniforms
Jerry Morales was saved from the Topps
airbrush. There was just tooooo much
yellow to paint.

Traded to the Cubs following the ’73
season for Glenn Beckett and Bobby
Fenwick; Morales’ career would take off
upon moving into Wrigley Field.  A   .248
hitter for the Pads, Morales would hit .
276 with 54 homers in four seasons with
the Cubs, which included a 1977 All-Star
appearance.

Sensing that they had tapped all that
they could from Morales after his All-Star
season, the Cubbies traded Morales to
rival St. Louis where his average
promptly dropped 51 points. The
disillusioned Cards moved him to Detroit
as his average continued to plunge as
he hit .211 for the 1979 season.

Next, Morales would go the Mets in 1980
where he would hit .254 in a part-time
role. As a free agent in 1981, Morales
looked around and remembered his
glory days with Chicago, ultimately
signing with the Cubs. There he would
return to form, hitting .285 in two
seasons of coming off the bench for the
Cubs. That’s why in Chicago Jerry
Morales will always be remembered as
such… a Cub all the way.
