Grover Powell--1964
When one thinks of the name Grover,
most of us will revert back to our days of
youth and remember a skinny blue fury
puppet from Sesame Street. However,
some New Yorkers may remember
Grover Powell, who flashed before their
eyes during the infancy of the Mets.
An Ivy Leaguer, who led the college
ranks in strikeouts during his sophomore
year at Penn, Powell would win just one
major league game during his lone big
league season. In a made for TV movie
setting, the 5’10” lefty tossed a shutout
at the Phillies on August 20, 1963 in his
first major league start, just miles away
from the Ivy covered walls of his alma
mater.
Powell would post an impressive 1-1,
2.72 mark in 20 big league outings in
1963, however injuries would derail the
career of the southpaw, but not before
he found his way onto a rectangle of
cardboard.
Editor’s Note: More could have been
written here, but the following is an
article by Stephen Eschenbach on the
life and times of Grover Powell says it all.
