Griffeys---1989
On this Date in Baseball
History...... September 14, 1990

From one generation to another,
the game of baseball has been
handed down from fathers to sons.
In a summertime ritual for ages,
fathers have taken their sons hand
to walk their young man into the
modern cathedrals of sports as
they worship their Cardboard
Gods.

I can still remember the excitement
of walking up to Wrigley Field as a
youth. Tucked beneath the
skyscrapers of Chicago, Wrigley
would rise out of the Northside
neighborhood as the sidewalk
bustled with action. As my father
would hand the Andy Fran ticket
taker our passes for the day, we
would embark on a special nine-
inning journey.

However, while many fathers share
their love of the game with their
sons, only the Griffey’s has been
able to share homeruns off of a
pitcher.

It was September 14, 1990 and the
Mariners and Angels were playing
under the stars, while both clubs
were helplessly chasing the AL
West leading Oakland Athletics.

With right-hander Kirk McCaskill on
the mound for the Halos, both Ken
Griffey, Sr. and Junior found
themselves in the lineup for
Seattle. After Harold Reynolds
coaxed a leadoff walk to begin the
contest, Senior delivered a line
drive shot over the left-center field
wall to give the Mariners a quick 2-
0 lead.

As the next batter, Junior
exchanged congratulations at
home plate, while he later recalled
to the media that his father told
him, “That’s how you do it, son.”

Well after Junior worked a 3-0
count off the rangy right-hander,
he too connected on a line drive
shot to almost the identical spot as
his father--- thus the Griffey’s
became first (and only) father-and-
son combination to homer in the
same Major League game.

Like father, like son.
