Fred Lynn---1975
Thrity-three years ago, Fred Lynn
enjoyed one of the most historic days
for a rookie when he personally
destroyed the Tigers. By connecting
on three home runs, to go with a
single and a triple during the Sox 15-
1 drubbing of Detroit, Lynn tied an
AL record of 16 total bases in
game.

Lynn opened the game with a two-
run homer off Tiger hurler Joe
Coleman in the first inning. He then
took the right-hander deep in the
second inning for a three-run bomb,
as Coleman saw his ERA climb from
5.79 to 6.42 in two innings of Fred
Lynn abuse.

The BoSox centerfielder tripled in the
third inning off right-hander Lerrin
LaGrow to drive in two more runs.
Tiger righty Bob Reynolds managed
to retire Lynn in the 5th on a lineout
to second for the only time Detroit
would send the rookie back to the
bench empty-handed.

Three innings later, Lynn would greet
Detroit’s Tom Walker with a single to
open the eighth inning; before
connecting on a three-run homer off
the right-hander in the ninth inning.

The lefty-swinging outfielder would
drive in 10 runs to up his RBI total to
50 to go with a .352 average on the
season. Within the month the rookie
would line up along side the
American League stars at the All-Star
Game in Milwaukee. It would be the
first of nine consecutive All-Star
Game appearances for Lynn.

He would finish the season with a .
331 average, second only to Rod
Carew, who was a magician with the
bat. Lynn would run away with both
the American League MVP and
Rookie of the Year Award in 1975.

Surprisingly, this card is listed for just
$8.00 in the Beckett Guide; no
thanks to the other three players.
