Estel Crabtree--1941
We don't know what is more strange.
1) That there was once a big league
player with the first name of Estel.
or
2) That Estel Crabtree was born in
Crabtree, OH.
It's all too weird.....
Editor's Note: A fine defensive outfielder
who played in 489 big league games
spread out over eight seasons with the
Reds and Cardinals in the 1930s and
1940s, Crabtree would bat .281 and slug
13 homers during his major league
career.
At the age of 37, he returned to the bigs
after a seven year hiatus during the
beginning of World War II to hit .341 in
77 games for St. Louis and gather
enough ballots to finish 32nd in MVP
voting for 1941.
Crabtree would hit .308 in nine seasons
in Triple-A Rochester, earning Hall of
Fame honors for both the Rochester
Red Wings and the International League.
