Ernie Banks--1955
The other day in the press box dinning
room I was sharing a meal with scouts
from the Phillies and Giants.

With diamonds twinkling on their fingers
from World Series' rings (Giants 2010
and Phillies 2008) the two scouts talked
about the high price for their bling.

For the scout from Philadelphia, his cost
of the ring was about $2,600. The Giants
scout chimed in that his cost was $4,900.
But that was just taxes, they didn't
disclose the value of the rings.

Wow.

I remember back to when I received my
1990 World Series ring with Cincinnati,
my tax bill was somewhere in the
neighborhood of $400. I can only
imagine the value of the present-day
rings--- of course, it could be the taxes.

As the two talked about how they had to
finance the payment for the rings, I
thought of Ernie Banks; who with flowing
tools that took him to Cooperstown, was
never able to play in a World Series and
compete for a ring.

Ernie... you deserved to pay the taxes
for a ring.

Editor's Note: No, don't read into this
that the scouts were complaining about
the taxes... it was just surprising to all of
us as to the extent of the taxes.
