Eddie Watt--1972
A vertically-challenged right-hander with
the Orioles in the late 1960s and early
1970s, Eddie Watt was often lined up to
collect saves when the Baltimore starters
couldn't finish their game. Unfortunately,
when Topps went to layout his 1972
cardboard, Watt was just a little off-
center.
A reliable closer for years, the 5'10" Watt
would annually log between 11 and 16
saves for the O's between 1968 and
1971, while posting ERA's that ranged
from 1.65 to 3.25.
Despite strong numbers, Watt was never
an All-Star, as he was lost in the
Baltimore stable of hurlers, which
featured perennial 20-game winners
Mike Cuellar, Jim Palmer and Dave
McNally.
Come World Series time, Watt came up a
little short as he went 0-3, 4.26 in eight
games over three Fall Classics.
When his career closed out in 1975,
Watt would finish with a nifty 2.91 career
ERA and 80 saves, allowing just 530 hits
in 659-2/3 innings of work--- and one
card that was just a bit off.
