Drew Hall--1990
"Look Mom, I finally got my braces!"
At age 26, an excited Drew Hall gave
a big smile for the Upper Deck
camera- man to show off his shinny
new braces.
Selected by the Cubs with the third
overall pick of the 1984 amateur
draft; Hall never really panned out
during a 10-year playing career, of
which half was spent at the major
league level. With a lively fastball that
he couldn't harness, Hall was
relegated to bullpen work for the
Cubs, Rangers and Expos for the
majority of his career.
Traded by Chicago with Jamie Moyer
and Rafael Palmerio to Texas in
1989 for Mitch Williams as a cast of
extras, Hall enjoyed his best season
in the bigs with the Rangers, going
2-1, 3.70 in 38 relief appearances.
However, the lefty was unable to
repeat his success the following
spring as the Rangers turned around
and traded Hall to the Expos prior to
Opening Day 1990. In return all the
Rangers could score was light-hitting
shortstop Jeff Huson.
Maybe it was because of the braces?
In the end, Hall walked away with a
9-12, 5.21 mark in 125 outings... and
a nice set of choppers.
Editor's Note: Hall's best day came
all at once, as on Sept. 24, 1986 for
Chicago he pitched a complete game
against the Mets for his first ML
victory, while collecting his lone big
league hit (a single off of Doug Sisk).
