Don Schulze---1985
Don Schulze looks more like an
infielder in his 1985 card than a
pitcher. Then again, it is with good
reason, as Schulze would allow more
hits than innings pitched in each of
his six major league seasons. During
his abbreviated career, the former #1
pick of the Cubs (1980, 11th overall)
allowed 422 hits in 338-2/3 innings.
He was essentially the fifth infielder
as hitters feasted on his fare.

Actually, 1985 would be his big year,
as the right-hander started strong
winning his first three decisions for
the Tribe. Unfortunately he followed
that with seven losses and a 7.52
ERA, earning a trip back to Triple-A
in late June.

"Schulze's still part of our overall
plans," said Indians manager Pat
Corrales, to
The Sporting News (July
8, 1985). "But, he's got to get his
head together. We told him in Spring
Training ---and it's just as true now---
that he has to go right at the hitters,
challenge them."

Schulze would return to Cleveland in
September to finish the season,
4-10, 6.10 in 19 outings for an
Indians' club that would wind up in
last place with a 60-102 mark.

Schulze's real challenge may have
been to just avoid getting hit with the
batted ball.
