Don Gullett---1978--- Part I
DON GULLETT-PART I
The State of Kentucky has never
been known as football country; after
all, basketball rules in the Bluegrass
State. While lights are turned on every
Friday night during the fall, not many
players have shown bright in Kentucky
on the gridiron.
However, Shaun Alexander, the 2005
National Football League MVP, was
one of those shining stars. The
Kentucky State Record Book shows
that the future Seattle running back,
set the record for most points scored
in a season at 326, when playing for
Boone County in 1994.
As a baseball scout in the Northern
Kentucky area during the early
1990's, I can attest to the fact that
Alexander could fly, even when he
was on a baseball field. Unfortun-
ately, in the ball games I scouted the
outfielder/third baseman could not hit
a lick. Shaun did make the right
career choice.
So, who scored the most points in a
single game in Kentucky State history
you ask?
Digging deeper into the annals of
Kentucky football lore, future major
league pitcher Don Gullett set the
record, when he scored 72 points...
yes, 72 points in a single game!
The pride of McKell High in tiny South
Shore, KY set the mark in a 1968
contest versus Wurtland. Gullett
accomplished the feat by scoring 11
touchdowns and kicking six extra
points.
And even though Wurtland was a
short holler down the road from South
Shore, just past Greenup and Grays
Branch--- 72 points, is allot of points.
