Dick Such---1971
In 1967 Dick Such went 0-16 for the
York (PA) White Roses in the Double-
A Eastern League.
YES, the White Roses.
And YES, zero-and-sixteen.
While most minor leaguers would
have been on the brink of being
released, it must be remembered that
the hard-throwing righty posted an
impressive 2.81 ERA. Also, note that
he pitched in the woeful Washington
Senators organization, which explains
why he was handed the ball enough
times to lose 16 games without
recording a victory.
Such eventually made it to the bigs in
1970 for his lone cup of coffee,
where he recorded one victory,
posted a 7.56 ERA and walked 45
batters in 50 innings.
So you ask, “What ever became of
Dick Such?”
Did he wind up selling used cars in
his hometown of Sanford, NC? Or
maybe become the store manager
down at the corner Piggly Wiggly?
None of the above. But if you check
out the team pictures for the 1987
and 1991 World Champion
Minnesota Twins, Such can be found
as the Twinkies’ pitching coach for
manager Tom Kelly.
Go figure.
