Dick Green--1973
In his 1973 card, Dick Green is
holding his breath as we assume he
is silently asking himself, “Will I
catch it or not?’

Not.

Green was a staple of the Kansas
City A’s team that morphed into a
World Championship Oakland club
in the early 1970s. However, he
never garnered Gold Glove or All-
Star status, despite registering an
annual fielding percentage that
rivaled the best second basemen in
the American League.

There was always a Bobby Knoop,
Davey Johnson or Bobby Grich at
the front of the line. Meanwhile,
Green was left with a bare mantle
and a 3-day vacation during the
middle of the season.

Yes, looking at this card, one
realizes that sometimes life is not
fair. After all, Green was known for
steady glove work during his 12-
year career, though in his ‘73 card,
the second sacker is portrayed for
eternity as a bumbling fielder.
