Deion Sanders--1992
While Deion Sanders was one of the last
athletes to play multiple pro sports, his
choice of concentrating on football was a
Hall of Fame decision.
The speedy Sanders didn't have much
pop and was far from a Gold Glove
outfielder; however, he did make things
happen in his own exciting way.
My most memorable Sanders sighting
came when he was a Yankee farmhand,
playing for the Triple-A Columbus
Clippers in 1989. As the Assistant Farm
Director and Scouting of the Reds, I
happened to in Columbus to watch the
Clippers.
One day, the lefty-swinging Sanders
laced a ball to the left-center field gap
and he was off the races. I just
remember seeing Sanders smell a triple
as the ball bounded around by the
outfield fence and he had not only a
second gear, but a third gear.
To this day, I haven't seen anyone go
from first to third as fast as Sanders did
that day. The sight of Sanders on the
base paths will forever be burned into my
memory. And yes, it was a stand-up
triple. The year this card came out,
Sanders would lead the National League
with a career-high 14 triples.
Man, he could really run... but then
again, we saw that most Sundays during
his illustrious NFL career.
Congrats to "Neon" Deion Sanders on
his selection to the Pro Football Hall of
Fame. He really did make the right
choice.
Editor's Note: Sanders would hit .263 in
641 big league games for the Yankees,
Braves, Reds and Giants.
